LONG ANSWERS Appearance: Kurt is always impeccable. From his hair to his shoes, he is always put together and fabulous. He has pale skin that burns easily and shows every blemish, so it would be a cold day in Hell before he skips on his moisturizing routine. Over the years Kurt has become a master of pulling together fantastic outfits, and looking like a million dollars even though most of his wardrobe comes from Ebay, Target or sales at Macy's. (And twice a year he gets a very large check from his maternal grandmother that he can spend half of on clothes. The other half has to go into his savings account.) He's a deft hand with a needle, and can make even the most boring of things look like they came from the pages of the fashion magazines. Some would call his ensembles outlandish, but Kurt loves to express himself through fashion. His friends can always tell his frame of mind from the types of clothes he wears on any given day. For much of his childhood, Kurt was a somewhat chubby child with an angel face. It's only over the past year or so that he's grown several inches (now standing at a more than respectable 5'10'') and slimming down. He has long, toned legs and slender arms. His neck is long and his cheekbones delicate but masculine in an unconventional way. He knows how to dress himself so his best assets (his legs) are showcased nicely.
Likes & Dislikes: Strengths & Weaknesses:
Personality: If one had to describe Kurt Hummel in three words it would be: fashionable, sarcastic and bitchy. He's judgmental, especially of other people's clothes and hair, and leans toward the effeminate gay stereotype. He loves fashion, Broadway and Judy Garland. Patti Lupone is his idol. He has every Broadway musical ever produced for film, and an extensive collection of songs on his iPod.
He acts more confident than he is, and is prone to serious bad judgment when it comes to handling crushes (see, his ENTIRE Sophomore year and cross reference with Finn Hudson). He can be a diva, but deep down he's a loyal, caring friend. He would say that his criticism of people's wardrobes comes from a place of caring.
Jealousy is another bad trait for Kurt, especially when it comes to solos. He's not above sabotage and manipulation to get what he wants, though over the past year he's (mostly) matured past that. Becoming friends with Blaine has helped in taht area, and he managed to put aside his own feelings if it meant helping Blaine get a guy who would make him happy.
Although Kurt exhibits mostly stereotypically gay traits, there are some unusual things about him. For one, he loves cars and working on engines. He's worked with his father every summer since he was 12, and before that he would sit and watch, enthralled, as Burt took apart and put back together any type of car imaginable.
Kurt is also brave, and unless extremely pushed beyond his limit, will not back down from anyone. He stood up to bullies for the first 9 years of his school education, and it was only when the bullying took a sexual turn that he retreated to the safety of Dalton Academy. His months there allowed him to heal his wounds, and he returned to McKinley more confident and proud than before.
Kurt is a romantic. He believes whole heartedly in True Love, seen in Disney movies, romantic comedies and Harlequin romance novels. When he was younger he wanted nothing more than to be Princess Buttercup and have his very own Westley come rescue him. He built up what he wanted his first kiss to be like so much in his head, that to have it stolen in a smelly locker room by someone who'd made his life hell for two years was devastating. He wants nothing more than to have his own Fairy Tale Romance, and at the moment he really hopes it will be Blaine. He's still not as interested in sex as most 17 year old boy are, but he's stopped stressing about it. He's come to the conclusion that sex without an emotional attachment is just not his thing, and whe he does form that connection with someone it's going to be amazing.
Kurt is also very ambitious. He's planned on leaving Lima from an early age, his sights set on New York City, or Boston if he doesn't get into any of his first choice colleges. Beyond that, he's not quite sure what he wants. All he knows is that he's going to work hard, get perfect grades, and get out Lima never to return (except to visit his father of course).
Over the summer he's taken an avid interest in politics in a way he never has before, and for the first time has started to think of something other than a career on Broadway for a future. His time at Dalton, aside from being peaceful and helping re-find his footing, opened his mind to a world outside mediocre academics. He'd always done well in school and enjoyed learning, but for the first time was challenged there. Even though it's his Senior year now, he's taking as many Honors and AP courses as McKinley allows.
Relationships: Burt: Burt is Kurt's world. It's been them against the world for almost ten years, and despite occasional fights and misunderstandings, there is nothing Kurt wouldn't do for his Dad. He's especially conscious these days of what his dad eats, and even after Carole and Finn moved in, Kurt has kept control of the kitchen. He also took over some of the book-keeping for the shop during his father's illness, though Burt has since taken back responsibility for that. His only regret with planning to leave for New York immediately after graduation is leaving Burt, but now that Burt has Carole, it's an easier decision to make.
Carole: Kurt really likes Carole, despite her unfortunate fondness for denim vests. He enjoys having a woman around the house again. Most of all, he's glad that his father will have someone there for him when Kurt leaves. He doesn't think he'll ever be comfortable calling Carole "Mom", but he does love her and is grateful that his manipulation scheme worked for the better.
Finn: Finn is the first boy Kurt ever "loved", and despite the immense embarrassment that is most of Sophomore year, he's come to really value Finn's friendship. They're still adjusting to being brothers, but the summer has helped with that. He knows Finn has his back, and it's actually really kinda nice having a brother.
Mercedes: Mercedes is his first friend. They bonded over singing and fashion, and she was the first person he actually told about being gay. They drifted apart somewhat in Junior year, stemming from their different religious beliefs. Add the fact that Kurt kept a lot of things to himself, transfered to Dalton, deepened his friendship with Rachel and started a relationship with Blaine, unfortunately his friendship with Mercedes had to suffer a bit. He still considers her his best friend, but she's not his only friend anymore.
Blaine: Blaine is Kurt's best friend. They have a lot in common, and he's the only other out gay boy Kurt knows. He admires Blaine's charisma and confidence. He fell in love with Blaine at first sight, but by the time Blaine fell in love with him too Kurt's feelings had deepened past first infatuation. Over the summer, their relationship went from honeymoon stage to friendship. Neither is really sure how that happened, but they agreed mutually to just be friends. (Subject to change with Blaine player.)
Rachel: Kurt's relationship with Rachel is not easy. They're too much alike to ever be comfortable, but it's because they're so much alike that he's come to love her. When they snuck onto the Wicked stage in New York, it was the most intensely emotional experience he'd ever shared with another person. The summer has only strengthened their friendship, as they've started PFLAG together and have been working on college apps and apartment hunting for NYC.
Karofsky: Kurt's feelings about Karofsky are complicated. He's still afraid of him, but the fear lessens every day. He mostly wants to help the other boy come to terms with himself and his sexuality. When Karofsky broke down in the hallway before Prom, Kurt realized that the other boy just really needed help. He can't forget what happened last fall, but he's ready to forgive him. He's gotten to know him a little better over the summer with the PFLAG meetings, and he's sure that there's hope for him yet.
Sam: His friendship with Sam has come as something of a surprise. He's always liked the other boy, admired the fact that he was willing to sing a duet in New Directions. He thinks Sam is funny, if nerdy, and considers him his best guy friend these days. Despite not having much in common, hanging out with Sam is easy and fun, and he's even come to appreciate Doctor Who. He even let Sam drag him to the Midnight premier of Harry Potter and Captain America. They weren't half bad.
Other New Directions Members: TBD
Background: Amanda Peterson was a young college graduate when she moved from her native Boston to Westerville, OH to teach at the Crawford County Day School. Her parents were less than pleased that she was leaving her family, her fiancé, and her job at the prestigious Winsor School for some hick town in Ohio. They were even less pleased when, less than six months later, they received a wedding invitation from their daughter. It seemed their blue blooded girl had fallen in love with, of all things, a mechanic. A mechanic without a college education at that, and a quick investigation showed that his finances were in a laughable state—he might not have had much debt, but neither did he have a stock portfolio or much of a savings account. However, it was clear that Amanda was deeply in love with this Burt Hummel, and the elder Petersons loved their daughter so they made an effort to at least tolerate Burt.
Amanda and Burt moved into a small house in Lima, far unlike her tidy little apartment in Westerville and a completely different world from the Boston townhouse she lived in with her parents. But they made it work. She continued making the short commute to Crawford County Day, and Burt worked his way up the chain of command at the auto shop. They knew they wanted children, but made the decision to wait until they were more financially stable, as they didn't want to ask Amanda's parents for money. Burt's parents had retired by this time, and had taken off on a cross-country RV trip which would end at a retirement community in Phoenix, AZ.
However, things did not go as planned and Amanda found out she was pregnant in late October of 1993. She and Burt had been married just over a year. Despite the financial hardships, neither ever thought of any option besides having the baby. When they found out it was a boy, Burt was over the moon. He went out and bought a miniature football helmet, and a tiny Bengals jersey. They painted the nursery green instead of blue however, and compromised on a safari theme rather than football. For every classical music CD Amanda played to the fetus, Burt would play a John Mellancamp album.
Kurt Hummel came wailing into the world at 12:01am on July 4th, 1994. He was always an active and inquisitive baby, and loved music from an early age. Amanda would often plop the infant in his bouncy seat and put on the radio just to watch him bounce around to the beat. Along with being inquisitive, Kurt was a mischievous and intelligent child. He walked and talked early, and could read by the time he was four. To his father's dismay he had no interest in sports even by age 3, preferring to play dress-up and have tea parties with his stuffed animals. His parents finally realized that something might be different about their son when he threw a temper tantrum at his 4th birthday party when he didn't get the pair of sensible heels he'd asked for. Neither Burt nor Amanda had any experience with homosexuals and weren't quite comfortable with the idea that their son might be gay. They loved him unconditionally, however, and made an effort to educate themselves (mostly by Amanda's insistence).
Despite being a rather feminine child, the one area he could bond with his father over was cars. Even at 5 years old, Kurt Hummel was fascinated by how an engine worked, and would often go to work with Daddy to watch him. But for the most part, Kurt was a Mummy's boy and loved spending time with Amanda, shopping, sewing and singing. He also was quite attached to his maternal Grandmother, who overindulged him with sweets, tea parties and dolls when he visited. Over all, Kurt had a happy, secure childhood and didn't know anything was different about him until he started kindergarten. The children weren't as kind as his preschool friends had been, and he quickly became the bigger boys favorite target. Nothing much changed over the first few years of elementary school. The only bright light were the voice and dance lessons his parents signed him up for, and spending afternoons at his father's shop.
And then, during a late season snowstorm just before Easter of 2001, Amanda Hummel was struck by a drunk driver while she was out getting groceries. She died instantly, and the Hummel men would never be the same. They didn't know how to cope without her, and Burt nearly gave into the pressure from Amanda's parents that Kurt go live with them in Boston. After all, what the hell did he know about raising a gay son (and by this point they were sure Kurt was gay). It was only through the intervention of Burt's boss Jim that Kurt didn't go with his grandparents. Jim pointed out that Kurt had already lost his mother, he didn't have to lose his father as well. And so, Burt kept Kurt with him and the two made the other the center of their life. Burt took over Amanda's place at Kurt's tea parties, and Kurt learned how to cook (simple things at first: sandwiches and cereal) so his father wouldn't burn down the kitchen.
Over the next few years, Burt started taking over more and more of the auto shop until he finally bought Jim out in 2005. Kurt went quietly through school, still taking his voice, dance and piano lessons, but rarely made friends. He was a quieter, more thoughtful boy than he had been, but built up an armor of indifference and sarcasm by the time he was in junior high. He finally realized what it meant to like boys when he was 12, and made up any excuse to hang around the auto shop and help out Mike, the college-aged mechanic his father had hired to pick up some of Jim's responsibilities as the older man grew closer and closer to retirement. He was terrified by his thoughts about Mike, and hid everything from his father, thinking that Burt--his beer drinking, football loving, alpha male father--wouldn't understand.
He made stealthy use of the public library, reading everything they had about homosexuality, and even doing research on the internet when he could. He found himself disgusted by the porn he stumbled across accidentally, but fascinated by the photos of two men holding hands and looking happy. By the time he started high school he'd come to terms with being gay, but had resigned himself to staying in the closet and not having a boyfriend until he went to college--preferably in New York or Boston. Some where that two guys could kiss in public and not be lynched.
It was also during his Sophomore year that he found the New Directions and joined up. He'd been interested in the Glee club from the start, but found Mr. Ryerson creepy beyond belief and had stayed away. When Mr. Schuester took over the club, Kurt auditioned and through the club made his first friends. He and Mercedes hit it off immediately, while he and Rachel were rivals from the start--for solos and for Finn Hudson. Kurt had never ceased being the favorite target of the bigger, more popular boys, and starting high school was no different. He became intimately acquainted with the inside of the dumpster, and learned to bring several changes of clothes to school in case of a slushy attack. Glee was his bright spot, and he soon found himself falling for the (mostly) honorable Finn Hudson. He was certain that with just a little push Finn would like him back, and they could be boyfriends.
Things did not go as planned, however, but a few good things did come out of his ill-fated crush on Finn. He joined the football team for one, and through that was able to come out to his father. He decided to join the Cheerios, and helped them win Nationals thanks to his 14 minute Celine Dion medly. Being a Cheerio afforded him some measure of protection from the jocks, and he actually enjoyed his time on the team. He concocted a plan to get his father and Finn's mother together, for selfish purposes of course, but things worked out in the end. And he and Finn became good friends, even if they didn't always see eye to eye. Burt married Carole Hummel in November of 2010, and the Hudmels moved into a new house, with a room for everyone.
The beginning of Junior year was, aside from his father's wedding, a complete disaster. His father had a heart attack in September, and for a week Kurt wasn't sure what he would do if his father died. He knew he could go and live with his grandparents in Boston, but that would mean his father was dead, and that was something he couldn't face. He also grew apart from Mercedes a bit, due to their different opinions on religion. They were still best friends, but there has been some tension between them since then. He felt unappreciated by the rest of New Directions, and the fact that he wasn't "one of the guys" was becoming painfully obvious.
But all of that paled in comparison to what he went through after one afternoon in the locker room. Sick and tired of being tormented by David Karofksy, and spurred on by the confidence his new friend Blaine inspired in him, he confronted his bully and after a heated exchange realized just how foolish he'd been. He was sure Karofsky was going to kill him, but instead the jock stole Kurt's first real kiss. Confused, angry, scared, but wanting to help Karofksy, Kurt told Blaine and the two of them confronted Karofksy, hoping to get him to admit he was gay and get help for his anger. The plan backfired, and Karofksy increased in his harassment of Kurt, this time with a sexual edge. Nothing extremely terrible ever happened, but that didn't stop Kurt from being frightened and feeling threatened and unsafe at McKinley.
Finally, after Karfosky's reversed expulsion, Kurt did something he swore he'd never do. He ran. He was scared, and tired, and sick from stress, and he didn't see any other option. As long as Karofsky freely roamed the school, Kurt couldn't be there. So he transferred to Dalton Academy in the nearby Westerville, even though the tuition was almost too much to handle along with his father's medical bills, but it was an easy choice to make when the other choice would leave Kurt in an unsafe environment. Plus, Dalton had Blaine, whom Kurt had developed a very serious and deep crush on.
Dalton proved to be very different from McKinley. There were the uniforms, which were both unflattering and unstylish, and harder classes that left Kurt feeling stupid and unprepared. The students were nicer, but Kurt didn't feel he fit in any better among the boys at Dalton than he did at McKinley. And contrary to popular belief, Dalton was not a gay Hogwarts. He was accepted as a Warbler, but his creativity and unique style were even less welcome within the rigid confines of Warbler tradition than they'd been in New Directions. That wasn't say Kurt didn't make friends or was disliked, the truth couldn't be father from that. He and Blaine grew closer, and Kurt made several friends among the Warblers, but he never felt at home the way he did with New Directions, despite their often and rather volatile brouhahas.
Eventually he became more comfortable at Dalton, and started doing better in classes. He'd never gotten over his crush on Blaine but by the time Regionals was approached he'd resigned himself to remaining friends. After all, Blaine didn't even think he was sexy, how could the other boy ever fall in love with him? And having Blaine as a friend was better than not having him at all. But then something amazing happened, Blaine did fall for him, and kissed him in the study lounge while Kurt was decorating a tiny grave for Parvoratti. Completely shocked, it took Kurt a few seconds to get with the program, but when he finally did, FIREWORKS! He had finally gotten his Prince Charming, and even losing Regionals to New Directions couldn't put (much of) a damper on that happiness.
Kurt and Blaine settled into a relationship of equals, and Kurt found himself starting to get over his self-esteem issues when it came to his looks and feeling more comfortable with his body the more times he and Blaine kissed. After all, Blaine clearly wanted him and Blaine was gorgeous, so there had to be something appealing about him.
In April, as Nationals grew closer, Kurt yearned to join his friends in preparations. They were going to New York!, the one place Kurt had always known he'd belong instantly. He wanted to be with Rachel when she saw Broadway for the first time, wanted to shop with Mercedes at the real Macy's, and most of all he wanted to be with his family on stage, kicking Vocal Adrenaline's ass. He and Blaine talked about hsi returning to McKinley, but knew it wouldn't happen while Karofsky was still there. And then the unbelievable happened: Karofsky apologized to the Glee Club and made an effort to make things right with Kurt.
Kurt was 100% sure something else was going on, and sure enough it turned out Santana had figured out Karofsky's dirty little secret and was blackmailing him. While he approved of her cutthroat ways, he knew that wasn't the only part of the story. But he really wanted to return to McKinley, so he did a little blackmailing of his own: Karofsky had to continue to stop the bullying, and he also needed to start a GSA* with Kurt. Even though he despised Karfosky, he didn't want the jock to become another gay suicide statistic, and figured a GSA would be the best way to educate David and make McKinley a safer place.
So he said a teary good-bye to the Warblers, who would all miss him but wanted the best for him, and an even tearier good-bye to Blaine (even though they'd still have each other after school and on weekends) and returned to McKinley, ready to kick ass once again. Gone was the terrified, insecure boy who had left, and in his place was Kurt Hummel: once again proud and fierce, and looking amazing.
New York was everything Kurt had thought it would be and more. Along with Rachel, he knew that after high school he would be coming here and making his life in the concrete jungle. They didn't win Nationals, but unlike the loss at Regionals Kurt really didn't care about that. They'd come in 12th place out of the entire country, and that was pretty cool. And he'd be coming back for good in a little more than a year, so even coming abck to Lima didn't seem like a big deal.
Summer came quickly, and he was looking forward to working in the garage, spending time with Blaine and enjoying himself in a way he hadn't in months. He kept his promise--more of a threat really--and made Dave start a PFLAG chapter with him through the local library. With the help of Rachel's dads, after a few weeks they had a small crowd at each meeting though Dave never looked comfortable. Kurt also attended his first Pride weekend in June, with Blaine, Rachel and Rachel's dads. It was amazing and Kurt came home filled with hope and enthusiasm in a way he hadn't in a long time. (Of course, he's still counting down the days until he can move to NYC, but he's a lot calmer about it these days.)
[Need to add in info about relationship with Blaine. Amicable break-up and still best friends hopefully! Or adjust canon so they never got together and remained friends. Need a Blaine first.]
Kurt's family was hosting a 4th of July BBQ/Birthday party when the storm came. Aside from a power outage, no damage was made to the Hudmel house. Kurt was among the first to feel really ill, and his "flu" lasted almost 3 weeks, with Burt freaking out and taking him to the hospital when things didn't get better after a few days. He finally recovered, but the illness had left him pale and weak. He spent most of August recuperating, and still sometimes feels dizzy. He doesn't mention this to anyone, especially Burt, because he never wants to go back to the hospital again.
Plot Intentions: Amicable break-up with Blaine (or adjusting canon so they were always just friends), rejoining the Cheerios, giving someone (everyone!) makeovers, discovering his powers, coming to terms with his powers, investigating Lima's history and finding out about the others, Burt being one of the adults who gets sick/dies, romance with Sam or Dave?
